Today, Holocaust education is still not required in Tennessee schools. With only a small number of survivors having settled in the state, their stories risk being forgotten. By bringing these voices back into the spotlight, this project hopes to renew awareness, honor those who spoke, and inspire a stronger commitment to mandating Holocaust education in Tennessee.

While this project honors the voices of Tennessee’s Holocaust survivors and liberators, its purpose extends beyond remembrance. The stories recorded by the Tennessee Holocaust Commission nearly twenty five years ago represent courage, resilience, and the enduring importance of truth. Yet they also serve as a warning. As time passes and firsthand witnesses fade, the responsibility to teach these lessons rests entirely on us. Tennessee is still one of the few states without a mandate for Holocaust education in public schools. Without it, future generations risk losing these lessons about courage, compassion, and the dangers of indifference. It is up to us to bring these stories into classrooms across the state.

Here's how you can help right now:

  1. Email or call your state representative and urge them to sponsor or co-sponsor reintroduction of HB 2491.
  2. Share why Holocaust Education matters to you, your family, or your community.
  3. Encourage others to take action using this link to find their representative.

Key points to mention when you reach out:

  • Tennessee currently lacks a Holocaust education requirement.
  • HB 2491 (2022) already passed the Senate and only narrowly failed to cross the finish line.
  • The bill promotes awareness, historical literacy, and moral responsibility.
  • We need a Republican sponsor this session to ensure it advances and becomes law.
  • Holocaust education saves truth from fading into silence, and Tennessee students deserve that lesson.
