The area from today’s Holden Hardware store all the way down to Vine Street was once a predominantly black-owned business district, referred to as "The Mink Slide." Ed Bell described it as a “little piece of street which slants down from a bent corner of the Square like the neck of a funnel and ends at the rim of the Bottoms.” Today, where the Boro Barber Academy sits, there was an empty lot where during the weekdays it was a place to hitch horses, buggies, and wagons. On the weekends, this lot was filled with fur traders and farmers selling furs from minks, possum, raccoon, fox, weasel, and more. They also sold things like knives, guns, horses, and mules in this lot. The most sought-after fur was mink which went for anywhere around $20-25 dollars each. There was also a 12-foot piece of sidewalk that was very slippery even without any snow or ice. These are the two likely origins of the district's nickname.
