Oakland Park is located within downtown Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Oakland’s borders stretch 31 acres wide with its heart being The Historic Oakland’s Mansion. Oakland Park is Downtown Murfreesboro largest park since its conversion to a park in the 1950s. During this time, Oakland originally housed a green space, swimming pool, tennis courts, shelters, and ball fields. Today, Oakland Park has continued its tradition of maintaining its green spaces, wildlife, gardens, and its wetlands, by downsizing some of its amenities by the 1960s. As well as, adding Oakland Mansion as a historic site in the 1960s and a Native Tree Arboretum registered in 2018. An Arboretum is a botanical garden dedicated to trees. In order for Oakland to be recognized by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council as an Arboretum, it took a few requirements. Oakland Park labeled tags with the trees scientific information and diligent upkeep. These labeled tags also list the Native American name of the tree species and what they were used for. With some of the trees dating back to over 100 years ago. In 2017, Oakland purchased about 12 acres of wetlands said to have environmental and historical significance in order to continue its preservation. Within the wetlands is Maney Spring which takes it name after the original owners of Oakland Mansion.
