Within the Small Senate Rotunda, a spacious circular chamber crowned by a dome, there exists a configuration of sixteen columns adorned with capitals. These capitals are intricately modeled to imitate the leaves and flowers of the tobacco plant. Carved from sandstone, they are painted with leaves gilded in gold and flowers depicted in red with green stems.

The design of the capital was done by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1816. A version of these capitals was sent to Thomas Jefferson in 1817 and still exists in Monticello's collection.

The 16 tobacco capitals within the Small Senate Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol were crafted from sandstone by Francisco Iardella in 1817. These capitals feature gilded tobacco leaves and are decorated with painted red flowers. The design was overseen by Benjamin Henry Latrobe.
